British Empire Securities and General Trust p.l.c. (British Empire) is a closed-end investment trust with shares listed on the London Stock Exchange and a part of the FTSE 250 index. The investment objective is to achieve capital growth through a focused portfolio of investments, particularly in companies whose share prices stand at a discount to estimated underlying net asset value.
British Empire is managed by Asset Value Investors Limited (AVI). We specialise in stock that at first glance - and for that matter, at second or even third glance - doesn't necessarily offer itself up as a potential high return investment opportunity.
The technical term is 'undervalued asset securities'. Investments that for one reason or another are priced below their true value but can be made into profitable performers.
Of course, finding such investments means searching harder than most asset managers are prepared to. And having spotted an opportunity, it means searching harder for those areas where potential value can be realised.
But we don't mind doing that. Not when it pays off in results that, since 1985, have seen British Empire grow from a £6 million trust to one with over *£725 million in total assets in 2009.
